Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs has sent logistics aid worth Rp346.7 million (US$21.8 thousand) for people affected by last week's landslide in Karo district, North Sumatra province.

According to a statement received from the ministry here on Monday, the aid arrived in the landslide-hit district on Sunday.

"To handle the disaster that hit Karo, North Sumatra, a team from the Social Affairs Ministry has distributed logistics assistance from the warehouse of the Bahagia Social Affairs Center of Medan city," Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf informed in the statement.

He said that the assistance comprised one thousand packages of ready-to-eat meals, 400 packages of child meals, 100 packages of family kits, 150 packages of children's clothing, 100 packages of adult clothing, 150 blankets, 150 mattresses, 10 portable family tents, and one multi-function tent.

The minister said that a joint team comprising soldiers, police officers, disaster preparedness cadets (Tagana), and officials of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Karo have begun cleaning up the debris and materials brought by the landslide in Karo, which occurred on Saturday.

Yusuf further said that the landslide that swept through homes in Semangat Gunung village, Merdeka sub-district, resulted in four deaths and left nine injured. Six missing were reported missing following the landslide, he added.

The search for the missing residents by the joint team is still on, he informed.

He said that the Ministry of Social Affairs will provide a compensation of Rp15 million (US$945) to the kin of each deceased victim and Rp5 million (US$315) each for those injured in the landslide.

Furthermore, the minister informed that the disaster also left two homes and one inn severely damaged.
