Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka reviewed the condition of residents affected by floods in Kampung Melayu and Cawang, East Jakarta, on Thursday.

The increase in rainfall intensity in the past few days has led to the overflowing of River Ciliwung, leaving several areas in Jakarta inundated by floodwaters of varying levels.

According to a statement issued by his secretariat in Jakarta, Gibran began his inspection by visiting a residential area on Kebon Pala I Street, Kampung Melayu, which was flooded with 2.5 meters of water originating from the river on Wednesday evening.

The Vice President arrived at an evacuation site at Kebon Pala 01 Public Elementary School after exploring some alleys.

At the location, he greeted local residents and participated in the distribution of aid in the form of packages containing rice, cooking oil, sugar, and some other staple commodities.

He also handed out milk, toys, and packages of stationery to local children.

Gibran then proceeded to the Bidara Cina area in Cawang, where floodwaters have reached up to 1.5 meters in height, to converse with locals and distribute basic goods.

Earlier on November 20, 2024, while visiting residents affected by tidal floods in Muara Angke, North Jakarta, the Vice President emphasized the need for all relevant parties to work in coordination to deal with Jakarta's recurring heavy rain-induced and tidal floods.

He called on stakeholders to ensure that all water pumps work optimally and keep drainage canals clean.

Furthermore, he highlighted that it is vital to devise and implement long-term anti-flood plans and speed up the construction of the infrastructure and facilities required for controlling floodwaters.
