Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of the General Elections Commission (KPU), August Mellaz, announced that the commission is ready to conduct a thorough evaluation of Wednesday's regional head elections due to the low voter participation.

"We will definitely continue to carry out the evaluation process," he said at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.

He said that the KPU is still focused on monitoring the vote count recapitulations conducted by KPU offices in all regions.

"We still need time because our officials at the provincial, district, and city levels are still carrying out the vote recapitulation stage. That remains our primary focus," he explained.

He noted that voter participation in the regional elections hovered around 70 percent nationally.

However, he added that this figure is within the normal range.

"Typically, voter participation in regional elections is lower than in presidential or legislative elections," Mellaz stated.

He assured that the KPU is prepared to evaluate the lower voter turnout compared to presidential and legislative elections.

He suggested that one reason people did not visit polling stations to cast their votes might be their location.

"For instance, polling station locations and similar factors could be included in the evaluation," Mellaz added.

Voter participation in this year's regional head elections was reportedly lower in several regions, including Jakarta.
