The meeting, attended by 10 leaders of anti-corruption agencies throughout ASEAN, plus Timor-Leste as an observer, aimed to align perspectives on efforts to eradicate corruption in the region.
"We all know that corruption crimes are cross-border. Many illicit assets are hidden abroad in other ASEAN countries," Deputy Chairman of KPK Alexander Marwata stated on Monday.
To address this issue, the anti-graft agency leaders in ASEAN expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation by conducting joint investigations, especially on alleged cross-border corruption cases.
The 20th ASEAN Parties Against Corruption meeting focused on using technology to eradicate corruption in the region.
"In cross-border corruption cases, we can conduct a joint investigation by using technology," Marwata remarked.
Marwata pointed out that varying law enforcement systems across different countries in the region pose a major challenge to eradicating corruption.
"This obstacle always exists because of the different legal systems. Indonesia adheres to the continental system, while Singapore and Malaysia adhere to different legal systems," he said.
He expressed belief that through regular meetings, leaders of anti-corruption institutions in the region can discuss law enforcement steps in handling corruption cases in ASEAN.
Moreover, Indonesia has collaborated with other international organizations outside ASEAN, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
