Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) follows state policy and decisions regarding changes in the structure of the National Police (Polri), a TNI official said.

The TNI respects any ongoing discussions, including changes to the structure of state institutions like the Polri, said Major General Hariyanto, the TNI Information Center head, on Monday.

"The TNI adheres to the law that regulates the roles and duties of every institution," he said.

While acknowledging the distinct mandates of the TNI and Polri, Hariyanto affirmed their effective coordination in safeguarding national security and stability.

"Coordination between the TNI and Polri has been effective in maintaining national stability," he said. "All changes related to the structure or coordination between institutions are the authority of the government and the parliament."

He reiterated that the TNI always follows the government's directives, including those from the defense minister, who acts as the 'mentor' in the defense sector.

"In principle, the TNI is committed to supporting every step aimed at maintaining the stability and sovereignty of the country," Hariyanto emphasized.

Discussions on changing the institutional structure of the Polri, currently under the president, to under the Ministry of Home Affairs, emerged after lawmaker Deddy Sitorus stated that his faction is exploring the potential change.

However, several experts, practitioners, civil society organizations, and other members of parliament have rejected the idea.

Chair of the SETARA Institute National Council Hendardi reminded that the Polri's status under the president's authority is a constitutional order stipulated in the 1945 Constitution.
