In its first coordination meeting at the National Police Headquarters on Thursday, the Desk agreed to accelerate three priority steps, including reviewing the acceleration of death penalty execution for drug convicts.
The three priority steps include ministries' and institutions' members of the Drug Eradication Desk to be fully committed to strengthening synergy and mutually supporting drug eradication efforts.
"This synergy includes increasing intensive coordination in prevention measures, law enforcement, rehabilitation, educational, and drug eradication campaigns," Gunawan noted in a press conference after the meeting.
According to the minister, the government also intensively traces and blocks funds from accounts connected to drug trafficking networks as well as is reviewing the acceleration of death penalty execution for drug convicts who received a final and binding verdict from the court.
"There will be no room for drug networks controlled from within correctional institutions," the minister emphasized.
Meanwhile, the third priority step is disseminating education and conducting campaigns on the dangers of drugs to the community, students, university students, and various other groups through several platforms.
The education and campaign aim to increase public awareness of the dangers of drugs and prevent them from abusing illegal substances from an early age.
"These three points were decided in this coordination meeting and have become a joint commitment. It will be followed up by the National Police, Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), Prosecutor's Office, and ministries and institutions members of the Drug Eradication Desk," Gunawan stated.
The first coordination meeting of the Drug Eradication Desk at the National Police Headquarters was led directly by Gunawan and attended by several high-ranking officials from ministries and institutions, including Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo; Attorney General S. T. Burhanuddin; and Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto.
