Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Papua Regional Police confirmed that a Papua police officer succumbed to fatal injuries at Tiom Regional Hospital, Papua Pegunungan, on Thursday after being assaulted by an unknown assailant.

Police Brigadier Tri Yudha Argadianto was one of the victims of the attack that occurred on Wednesday (December 11) in Yokibak Village, Nogi Sub-district, Lanny Jaya District, Papua Pegunungan.

The condition of the other victim, First Police Inspector Adjutant Hidayat, is currently stable.

“In addition to the two Lanny Jaya police officers, the unidentified person also fired a gun, which led to a resident, namely Bastam (43 years old), being injured,” Head of Papua Regional Police's Public Relations Senior Commissioner Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo told ANTARA here on Thursday.

He also noted that the perpetrator also stole the pistol that Argadianto had brought.

When questioned about the potential involvement of an armed separatist group in the attack, Prabowo refrained from confirming any specific affiliation at this time.

"Our officers are still investigating the attack," he stated.
