Jakarta (ANTARA) - Filipino death row inmate Mary Jane Veloso was transferred from Yogyakarta to Jakarta before being sent back to her home country, according to an Indonesian official.

The drug-trafficking convict was moved by land to a women's penitentiary in Pondok Bambu, Jakarta, on Sunday night, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, Deputy Coordinator for Immigration and Corrections of the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, said.

"The pick-up went safely and was conducive," he noted in a statement on Monday.

Mary Jane's transfer was a follow-up to the signing of a practical agreement between the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, and the Philippines Undersecretary of Justice Raul T. Vasquez in Jakarta on December 6.

At the press conference after the agreement signing, Mahendra stated that Mary Jane would be transferred to the Philippines before Christmas. However, he did not provide details on the exact date for the transfer.

According to the minister, the Philippine government agreed to all the conditions set by the Indonesian government in the draft of Mary Jane's transfer agreement.

"They did not reject any terms because we formulated the draft based on international customs and also considered the legal aspects and benefits that apply in our own country," he remarked.

Vasquez expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian government for Mary Jane's transfer.

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the generosity of the Indonesian government and the Indonesian president, who has facilitated the transfer of a convict, our citizen, Mary Jane Veloso," Vasquez stated on the same occasion.

Mary Jane Veloso, a death row inmate convicted of smuggling 2.6 kilograms of heroin, was arrested at Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta in April 2010. Although she was sentenced to death by the Sleman Court in October 2010, she was later found to be a victim of human trafficking.
