Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia emphasized the importance of information exchange between countries for tackling drug smuggling at the 14th meeting of the ASEAN airport interdiction task force (AAITF).

The meeting was held online on December 12, 2024.

At the meeting, head of the the National Narcotics Agency's (BNN's) Sub-Directorate for Regional and International Cooperation, Deputy for Law and Cooperation, Muhamad Irham Anwar, said that Indonesia is currently a destination country that is a market for illegal narcotics.

"The 14th AAITF meeting is part of Indonesia's cooperation with countries in the ASEAN region to exchange information in strengthening airport supervision of drug smuggling carried out by syndicates," Anwar said, according to a statement released on Monday.

Indonesia hopes that the periodic meetings held by the AAITF can provide a lot of inputs to strengthen supervision and cooperation in handling cross-border drug smuggling, he added.

The second AAITF meeting in 2024 was held virtually and was joined by all ASEAN countries.

Similar to previous AAITF meetings, information exchange was the main agenda raised by member countries.

During the last meeting, BNN program and reporting compiler at the Interdiction Directorate, Anakri Askari, provided details on the development of narcotics problems in Indonesia.

In front of delegates of member countries, he highlighted the problems faced by Indonesia in handling the illicit trafficking of narcotics, especially when it is carried out via air routes.

The AAITF focuses on interdiction activities at airports. It discusses technical matters related to implementing operations to break up national and international drug syndicate networks that carry out smuggling using air transportation.
