Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is currently reviewing the letter from the French government regarding the transfer of Serge Atlaoui, a French national who is on death row in Indonesia for drug offenses.

This was confirmed by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, Yusril Ihza Mahendra via a text message on Sunday.

Mahendra noted that the French government had sent an official letter regarding the transfer request on Thursday (December 19). The letter was sent on behalf of the French Minister of Justice to the Indonesian Minister of Immigration and Corrections.

According to him, the Indonesian government will discuss further the letter in early January 2025 after the year-end holidays.

He noted that later, the transfer of Serge Atlaoui would be carried out based on a practical arrangement like the repatriations of death row convict Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines and members of the Bali Nine to Australia.

"If the two countries agree, the agreement will be put into a practical agreement that will be signed by ministers who represent each government," he remarked.

Earlier, the French Ambassador to Indonesia, Fabien Penone, visited Minister Mahendra in his office in Jakarta on Friday (December 20).

At the bilateral meeting, the governments of Indonesia and France did not exchange drafts on cooperation for the transfer of Serge Atlaoui yet.

The minister noted that the meeting discussed the legal conditions in the two countries.

Atlaoui was sentenced to death after being found guilty of operating an ecstasy factory in Tangerang, Banten, in 2007. His pleas for clemency to the Indonesian government were repeatedly rejected.
