Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Philippine authorities are ready to transfer Mary Jane Veloso, who is on death row in Indonesia for drug smuggling, according to Coordinating Minister of Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Penitentiary Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra.

"Since yesterday, staff from the Philippines Ministry of Justice and the police have come here and prepared her journey," he informed at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

Veloso is currently lodged in a women's penitentiary in Pondok Bambu, Jakarta. She was transferred from a women's prison in Yogyakarta on Sunday evening.

The drug-trafficking convict is scheduled to be transferred to the Philippines early on Wednesday morning.

She will depart for the Philippines via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, with the assistance of the Philippines Embassy in Jakarta.

All travel documents and tickets for her return have been prepared by the Philippines Embassy.

Veloso's transfer is a follow-up to the signing of a practical agreement between Minister Mahendra and Philippines Undersecretary of Justice, Raul T. Vasquez, in Jakarta on December 6, 2024.

Veloso, a death row inmate convicted of smuggling 2.6 kilograms of heroin, was arrested at Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta in April 2010.

Although she was sentenced to death by the Sleman Court in October 2010, she was later found to be a victim of human trafficking.
