Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has called for firm action against the smuggling of textile products into the country, describing it as a threat to Indonesia's sovereignty.

"The smuggling of textiles threatens domestic industries and the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of our workers," he said during a conference on the national development plan in Jakarta on Monday.

Prabowo highlighted that such illegal practices are committed not only by foreigners but also by Indonesians residing in the country.

"The smuggling committed by our citizens here poses a threat to Indonesia's sovereignty," he remarked.

He emphasized the need to grant special authority to responsible officers, enabling them to take stronger measures against smugglers.

In addition, the government may resort to extreme measures, such as destroying ships used for smuggling, to serve as a deterrent, Prabowo added.

He emphasized the importance of building a clean and trustworthy administration to safeguard sovereignty and protect citizens from the detrimental effects of illegal practices.

"Indonesia must have a clean government," he pointed out.
