Jakarta (ANTARA) - Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti on Tuesday said that teaching coding and artificial intelligence (AI) as elective subjects in schools can equip children with the necessary skills for the present and future.

"For coding and AI, first we emphasize that they are elective subjects, not compulsory subjects. Therefore, what we are preparing now is the software, which is the curriculum," he said here.

According to the minister, the initiative is part of digitalization in education, a flagship program of President Prabowo Subianto.

He said that coding and AI can also help develop a number of other skills, such as creativity and collaboration.

They are not just meant to help students complete a certain level of education, but also improve their non-academic skills, which can prove useful in the future, he added.

In its implementation, the government will focus on developing human resources, including training teachers.

As for the hardware, Mu'ti said that it will be adjusted to the capabilities of each educational unit.

The government plans to include coding and AI as subjects during the 2025–2026 school year.

They will be taught to students starting from grade 4 of elementary school as part of skills subjects.
