Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - A drug-impaired car driver struck and killed a family of three traveling by motorcycle along Hang Tuah Street in Pekanbaru, Riau Province.

Head of the Pekanbaru City Police Traffic Unit, Commissioner Alvin Agung Wibawa, confirmed on Wednesday that the vehicle's driver was a man with a female passenger.

Urine tests conducted on both individuals returned positive results for methamphetamine use following their celebration of the New Year's party.

"We have arrested both of them, and they are undergoing further examination. Based on provisional information, they visited a nightlife venue before the incident," Wibawa stated.

He explained that the driver was traveling from the Kulim area to downtown on Wednesday morning. While driving at a high speed, the driver swerved to the right and collided with a motorcycle.

The collision resulted in two immediate fatalities, a mother and a child. The husband, however, was in critical condition and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

Residents covered the bodies of the deceased victims with a cloth.

In the meantime, the car, bearing a license plate from West Java, overturned and sustained damage to its front end while the motorcycle was completely destructed.

Both the car driver and the other passenger were reported to be unharmed.

Earlier, on December 23, the Riau Regional Police confiscated 2.6 kilograms of methamphetamine, 483 ecstasy pills, and six thousand Happy Five (H5) pills that were suspected to have been distributed at the New Year's Eve celebrations.

The Riau Police has continued with its investigations to determine the origin of the illegal goods and whether they were linked to an international illegal drug network.
