“It is expected that this (MoU) will grow national civilized culture where people can manage waste properly and be environment-friendly,” Minister Nurofiq said at Kuta Beach in Badung District here on Saturday.
He explained that the MoU is concerned with building synergy between duties and functions in the fields of environmental protection and primary and secondary education.
He said that in the near future, his side will hold a coordination meeting with heads of local offices to turn the Adi Wiyata initiative into a more practical program.
Adi Wiyata is an environmental education initiative in elementary and secondary schools that started in 1996.
“It will be expanded to the higher education level as well. This is a real step based on the President’s instruction, in which we were asked to maintain the quality of the environment while also working to boost economic growth,” he said.
He added that economic growth also contributes to waste generation.
For instance, he said, one person can generate over one kilogram of waste each day in Bali, which is a tourism hub.
While taking part in an activity to clean up marine litter on Kuta Beach on Saturday, Minister Nurofiq said that the volume of garbage in Indonesia reached 56.63 million tons in 2023.
Meanwhile, Minister Mu'ti said that the MoU synergy is part of promoting a clean living culture.
“With this collaboration, educators can get involved in maintaining environmental preservation and cleanliness, as it starts with us in education, as students get guidance from teachers,” he added.
