Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Culture has started the restoration work at the historical site of the Cut Nyak Dhien's house, located in Lampisang Village, Peukan Bada, Aceh Besar District, Aceh Province.

"We are continuing the restoration of the Cut Nyak Dhien house and hope to create a good ecosystem for historical and cultural activities," Minister of Culture Fadli Zon remarked here on Monday.

Cut Nyak Dhien is a national hero from Aceh who fought against Dutch colonialism for 25 years. She died on November 6, 1908, in Sumedang, West Java.

Zon explained that the restoration work is essential for rediscovering the culture of Indonesia, especially Aceh, and for providing historical education to the younger generation.

"These stories are very important for the Indonesian people and, particularly, for the younger generation of Aceh," Zon remarked.

Head of the Aceh Province Culture and Tourism Office, Almuniza Kamal, commended the Aceh Region I Cultural Preservation Center's (BPK's) efforts in enhancing the information provided at Cut Nyak Dhien's house.

"That way, (members of) the community can enrich their understanding of the struggles of Cut Nyak Dhien and Teuku Umar (Cut Nyak Dhien's husband)," he remarked.

Almuniza noted that Aceh is home to several valuable historical stories, including that of Cut Nyak Dhien's house.

Although the current house is a replica, it was built on the original site, as the Dutch burned down the previous house in retaliation for discovering that Teuku Umar had only pretended to cooperate with them.

In addition, he expressed optimism that artists and cultural activists would contribute to enriching the public space around Cut Nyak Dhien's house, making it more vibrant in the future.

After being burned by the Dutch, Cut Nyak Dhien's house was rebuilt to its original design in 1981 and became a destination for educational and historical learning tourism. The current house was officially inaugurated in 1987.
