During a dissemination of information on waste recycling monitored online here on Tuesday, an official from the ministry, Ujang Solihin Sidik, stated that the law has mandated the task of waste management to producers and business players.
"Producers are an inseparable part of waste management because packaging products originates from them," he emphasized.
He noted that the government has followed up on producers' obligation to reduce waste by issuing Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.75/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/10/2019 concerning the Roadmap for Waste Reduction by Producers.
"There is an obligation to reduce it (waste generation) by 30 percent by 2029," he stated.
Sidik underlined that producers must limit waste generation or reduce it by ensuring that their products either do not generate waste or minimize it effectively.
One example of the steps that can be taken is selling products without packaging or using a refill system.
Additionally, producers are expected to retrieve the product packaging post-consumption for recycling and reuse.
"Then again, the principle is 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle)," he remarked.
According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), plastic waste accounted for 19.35 percent of the total waste in 2024, ranking second after food waste at 39.71 percent.
