In a statement issued on Sunday, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto highlighted plans to develop an ecotourism destination using funds from sources other than the State Budget, with the aim of boosting both the tourism and creative economy sectors.
The ecotourism project, which is planned to cover 1,755 hectares of land in PIK 2 and has an investment value of around Rp65 trillion (nearly US$4 billion), is expected to directly employ 6,235 workers and create over 13,000 jobs as a collateral effect.
Hartarto underlined that the green tourism destination is also designed to support the development of a mangrove tourism area.
He remarked that apart from the Tropical Coastland project, the government will continue evaluating the development of all PSNs across the country.
In the same statement, Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, noted that the government gives equal attention to physical infrastructure, an equitable economy, food availability, technology, tourism, and education in PSN development.
He dismissed rumors suggesting a link between the PSN in PIK 2 and the presence of an illegal sea fence spanning over 30 kilometers in the waters of a nearby coastal area.
"The 1,755-hectare PSN has nothing to do with the presence of the sea fence that has been frequently discussed recently," he explained.
The navy has removed parts of the sea fence, which was declared illegal due to its lack of a permit and its obstruction of fishermen's navigation.
