Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad has said that his side will carefully review the government's plan to limit children's access to social media.

"We want to discuss this further with the relevant technical committee before making a decision," Ahmad informed while issuing a statement at the parliament complex here on Thursday.

According to him, restricting the use of social media by children could also cause controversy if the policy is not appropriate.

He confirmed that the House's leadership discussed the plan to limit social media in a recent meeting.

"Recently, it was discussed in our leadership meeting," he said.

Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno said that the government will hold a Cabinet meeting to discuss plans to limit social media for children.

"The government will internally discuss and decide on this matter. There are both positive and negative aspects that need to be considered," he added on Monday.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said that his ministry is still reviewing the plan to restrict social media use by children.

"We are studying the plan, as Australia has implemented a similar restriction. We know that social media has both benefits and drawbacks, and there have been many complaints about its negative impact," he informed in a statement released on January 15, 2025.

Regarding this matter, President Prabowo Subianto and Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid met to discuss the government's plan to protect children in digital spaces.

Hafid said that the government is considering drafting a regulation to protect children in the digital space while at the same time preparing for a stronger regulation.

"In principle, while we are working on a stronger regulation, the government will issue a regulation first," she added.
