Pontianak, W Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations have turned into major tourist attractions in Pontianak city, acting mayor of Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Edi Suryanto, said here on Saturday.

"Cap Go Meh draws people to visit West Kalimantan, especially Pontianak city. This celebration brings significant economic benefits, especially in the tourism, transportation, and accommodation sectors," he expounded.

He said that the Pontianak city government is ready to support the Cap Go Meh festivities.

He revealed that a final coordination meeting will be held soon to discuss the preparations for the event.

According to him, the Cap Go Meh tradition is an essential part of both the culture and tourism in Pontianak. He added that Pontianak, which lacks abundant natural resources, relies heavily on trade and services.

He said he believes that Cap Go Meh is not just a religious occasion but also a cultural event that involves everyone in the community, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.

"This symbolizes religious harmony in Pontianak," he noted.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, relevant local authorities will be deployed, including personnel from the Public Order and Security Agency (Satpol PP), the Transportation Office, the Education and Culture Office, and other related agencies.

"With thorough preparation and strong support from both the government and the community, we hope Cap Go Meh will be successful and have a positive impact on the economy and social harmony in Pontianak city," he said.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the Cap Go Meh 2576 Committee, Hendry Pangestu Lim, said that the community has been involved in the preparations, including the installation of lanterns along Jalan Gajah Mada.

He encouraged the Chinese ethnic community in Pontianak to celebrate the Chinese New Year in a simple but meaningful manner, highlighting the importance of spending time with family and friends.
