The accident, which occurred at 11:30 p.m. local time, led to the victims being transported to the Ciawi Regional General Hospital for medical treatment and further handling.
The hospital and police are working together to identify the victims, said Senior Commissioner Eko Prasetyo, Bogor Municipal Police Chief, on Wednesday.
The eight individuals who lost their lives in the incident comprised seven men, aged between 25 and 60 years, and a woman, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old.
Prasetyo stated that the collision was caused by a truck transporting water gallons, which failed to stop at the toll gate.
"The truck's brakes were suspected to have malfunctioned, causing it to crash into vehicles that had stopped at the gate to pay the toll," he explained.
Footage shared on social media showed the chaotic aftermath of the crash, depicting burned minibuses, scattered debris, and water gallons, along with significant damage to a section of the toll gate.
The incident, which occurred on the toll road connecting Jakarta and Bogor, damaged at least six vehicles, three of which were completely burned. The wrecked vehicles have been taken to the police office for further investigation, Prasetyo said.
The police traffic corps has since reopened the Ciawi toll gate after temporarily closing it for several hours to clear the accident site and evacuate the victims.
