Korlantas Chief Inspector General Aan Suhanan informed that his team obtained the facts following an investigation at the site of the consecutive collisions, which involved one truck and 17 minibuses and left one person dead and dozens injured.
"According to our on-site investigation and information collected from Jasa Marga (state-run toll road operator), it is safe to say that the crash was a carrom-like accident," he said in a statement released by his office here on Thursday.
Suhanan explained that an accident is dubbed carrom-like when it involves a vehicle ramming another from the rear. He added that the 18-vehicle crash occurred on a wet Cipularang road following heavy rain.
The investigation team found traces of braking one kilometer away from the accident site, the officer informed.
"We still need to conduct further investigation to determine whether the traces were made by the vehicles involved or were merely old traces," he added.
The Korlantas chief further said that his corps has also identified braking traces on the brake pads of overheated, discolored wheels.
"Note that we still need to dig deeper into the evidence found on the site and the information acquired from Jasa Marga to assess the speed of the drivers and observe their attitude prior to the accident," he informed.
He said that the new facts are not sufficient for the Korlantas to determine the cause of the crash, adding, "We need to reconstruct the findings of the on-site probe."
