In a statement received here on Tuesday, BPOM head Taruna Ikrar said that the cooperation is an important step to bolster the regulation and development of traditional medicines, as well as strengthen health diplomacy and increase the competitiveness of local products.
"We are optimistic that through this collaboration, the competency of regulators and expert staff in Indonesia can be increased through various training programs and exchange of knowledge with India, which has extensive experience in traditional medicine management," he added.
BPOM and PCIM&H have agreed to collaborate in various important aspects, including the exchange of information and experts, technical visits and benchmarking, and the development of joint training programs. Other forms of collaboration have also been mutually agreed upon.
Ikrar affirmed that the two countries are committed to aligning regulatory standards to ensure that their traditional medicine products meet global quality and safety requirements.
He said that the collaboration is expected to not only have an impact on strengthening the supervision system but also benefit the industry and society.
With better supervision standards, he explained, Indonesian traditional medicine products have a greater opportunity to compete in the international market with guaranteed consumer safety.
He further said that as a country with abundant biodiversity, Indonesia has great potential to develop traditional medicines based on nature-based ingredients.
The cooperation between the two institutions will open more opportunities for Indonesian traditional medicine products to be exported to India and other countries, thereby supporting growth in the local wisdom-based pharmaceutical sector.
Ikrar explained that as a follow-up, BPOM and PCIM&H will create an action plan that includes short-term and long-term cooperation focused on increasing supervision and innovation of traditional medicine products.
The agreement is one of the results of President Prabowo Subianto's visit to New Delhi on January 24–25.
