Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is continuing to explore the development of domestically produced electric vehicles, including an electric version of the Maung tactical vehicle manufactured by PT Pindad.

This was conveyed by the Minister of Investment and Downstreaming and head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, following a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday.

"The Maung tactical vehicle has the potential to be further developed as an electric vehicle," he said.

According to the minister, the limited meeting discussed strategies to strengthen investment in the development of the electric vehicle industry in Indonesia and involved several related parties.

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin; president director of PT Pindad (Persero), Prof. Sigit Puji Santoso; Prof. Brian Yuliarto from the Bandung Institute of Technology; and deputy president director of PT TBS Energi Tbk, Pandu Patria Sjahrir, also joined the meeting.

Roeslani said that besides drawing foreign investment, the government is focusing on the development of national electric vehicles with the involvement of national defense equipment manufacturer PT Pindad.

The development of the Maung tactical vehicle into an electric vehicle is expected to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and encourage the national automotive industry to take a more environmentally friendly direction, the minister informed.

"We have been consistent for net zero emissions in 2060. In fact, the President asked for early achievement before 2060," he added.

According to its official website, PT Pindad, headquartered in Bandung, West Java, is currently developing the Morino EV, a light, four-wheeled electric tactical vehicle designed for high-mobility operations.

The vehicle is equipped with an electric power drive with a power of 160 HP/125kW. The Morino EV can be driven at a safe speed of 100 km/h and has a battery capacity of 292V (150 thousand mAh).

Minister Samsoeddin assessed the development of Morino EV on January 9, 2025. During his visit to PT Pindad, he also reviewed the readiness of the third electric version of the Maung vehicle, which is ready to be inaugurated by the President soon.
