Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government stated that educating people early about cancer and improving the quality of life for cancer patients become a priority that needs to be fought for together.

"By increasing our understanding of cancer, we hope we can accelerate prevention, and therefore promote more effective treatment," Acting Governor of Jakarta, Teguh Setyabudi, said while attending a World Cancer Day event here on Sunday.

He also urged Jakarta residents to take care of their health by adopting a healthy lifestyle, undergoing in regular check-ups for early detection, and supporting medical innovations for better cancer treatment.

In addition to early education, Setyabudi emphasized the importance of providing encouragement for cancer patients, saying that support from the community is crucial in giving hope and strength to those battling cancer.

During the event, he praised the collaboration of various groups in organizing activities that celebrate the spirit of cancer fighters, such as a running race.

"On behalf of the Jakarta Provincial Government, I appreciate the collaboration in consistently delivering educational programs and health campaigns every year," he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health reported that the number of cancer cases in Indonesia continues to rise and is expected to increase by more than 70 percent by 2050 if prevention and early detection measures are not enhanced.

Currently, about 400 thousand new cancer cases are detected each year, with a death toll of 240 thousand cases.

The Health Ministry admitted that early detection of cancer is still a challenge in Indonesia. Many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to lower treatment success rates and higher treatment costs.

As part of the national strategy, the Ministry has launched the National Action Plan on Cancer for 2024-2034 to enhance screening and early detection efforts.
