"Jakarta is independent based on its regional budget. The city can sustain itself," he said on Sunday.
President Prabowo Subianto has issued an instruction on budget efficiency for state and regional budgets.
Based on a report from his transition team, Rano said that Jakarta was affected by a budget efficiency measure of Rp38 billion (around US$2.3 million).
"This will not disrupt the campaign programs. Of course, we have to be efficient with the Rp38 billion budget cut," he remarked.
Rano said that budget efficiency could be implemented by reducing official travel expenses, food and beverage costs, hotel meetings, and other expenditures that had been identified.
However, the Jakarta administration will not fully cut these funds, as doing so would affect hotel occupancy and ultimately impact the economy.
"Maybe we should not fully cut the spending, as it would affect industries such as hotels. We will follow the regulations, but the cuts will not exceed the determined target," he stated.
Earlier, Rano mentioned that he would immediately begin working after being officially inaugurated. Even before that, he had already started by inspecting several locations.
"Before being inaugurated, I was already working. Yesterday, I reviewed the Pluit Reservoir," he said.
Rano stated that after the inauguration, he would immediately begin working for the people of Jakarta, as his position is a mandate given by them.
He had inspected several locations, particularly those related to coastal flood preparedness in Jakarta.
"I visited reservoirs in Muara Baru and PIK because even before the inauguration, the threat of coastal flooding was already present," he noted.
Pramono Anung and Rano Karno were declared the governor and deputy governor-elect of Jakarta on January 9. They won the most votes in all six regions that make up Jakarta.
