Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian on Monday urged local governments to monitor the prices of several commodities ahead of the Ramadan month.

He made the statement here in response to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), which showed an increase in the prices of certain goods in some regions during the second week of February 2025.

For example, he informed, the price of red chili has increased in 196 districts/cities, cooking oil in 166 districts/cities, and granulated sugar prices in 148 districts/cities.

"The commodities we need to pay attention to are red chili, cooking oil, sugar, cayenne pepper, and garlic," Karnavian said here on Monday.

He then encouraged people to grow cayenne pepper in their own yards. He explained that chili is easy to grow. However, many regions still rely on other regions that produce surplus crops.

"Because these plants are easy to grow, and they are also easy and quick to harvest; many areas are very dependent on areas with a surplus (of crops)," he said.

He also urged the Ministry of Trade to find a way to prevent shortages of garlic before Ramadan.

At the meeting, he informed that he will report the outcomes of the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting to President Prabowo Subianto and seek further directives to keep commodity prices stable before Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.

"I will report the results of this inflation coordination meeting to the President to get further directives," he said.

Furthermore, Karnavian asked local governments to prepare anticipatory steps to deal with the surge in homecoming or exodus flows ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2025.
