Jakarta (ANTARA) - Brian Yuliarto, a professor and researcher, was appointed the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology in place of Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro by President Prabowo Subianto here on Wednesday.

He has a number of impressive achievements from his time as an academic.

The professor from the Faculty of Industrial Technology of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) won the 2024 Habibie Prize in Engineering Science.

Brodjonegoro, who is also the vice rector for research and innovation at ITB, ranks among the top 2 percent of the world's best scientists and is the top researcher in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology in Indonesia.

He completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics at ITB in 1999 and master's and doctoral degrees from the Quantum Engineering and System Science Department of the University of Tokyo in 2005.

In 2006, Yuliarto started to focus on research related to the development of nanomaterials for sensor applications and energy.

During his academic career, Yuliarto has also served as dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology ITB (2020–2024) and as a visiting professor at Tsukuba University (2021–present).

He has also been involved in various research projects and collaborations with international institutions, such as UC Berkeley, Korea University, and several research institutions in Japan.

He has 343 scientific publications in internationally recognized journals, with more than six thousand citations and an h-index of 40 in Scopus.

Outside of academics, he is active as chairperson of the Institute for Strategic Studies and Partnerships of Muhammadiyah West Java (2023–2027) and the chair of Muhammadiyah Cibeunying Kaler (2023–2027).

Yuliarto's appointment is expected to help support quality research, establish global collaborations, and build the future of science in Indonesia.

This is expected to help secure the progress of the industrial sector in Indonesia through steps such as improvements to the higher education sector to develop a quality generation that can contribute to Golden Indonesia 2045.
