Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) inspected 2,449 heads of cattle imported from Australia at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta.

Sriyanto, Barantin's deputy for animal quarantine, said in a statement released on Friday that Jakarta Quarantine examined 184 breeding cattle and 2,265 feeder cattle through physical and document inspections aboard the ship before the animals were transferred to the Animal Quarantine Installation.

He said that Barantin ensured the imported cattle were healthy and free from quarantine animal pests and diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease (LSD).

"This quarantine process is important to ensure that imported cattle entering Indonesia are healthy and disease-free. Treatment, including disinfection and vaccination, is a crucial step in preventing the spread of diseases such as FMD and LSD," Sriyanto said.

He added that Barantin imposes strict quarantine measures at the pre-border stage through prior notifications and at the border through port inspections, which include disinfection and physical examinations.

Post-border measures include animal quarantine at designated installations and disease monitoring after release, he said.

Data from Barantin shows that national imports of Australian feeder cattle reached 487,452 heads in 2024. The livestock were brought in through various entry points, including Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta and Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya.

Barantin also conducted laboratory tests to ensure that all technical animal health and quarantine protocol requirements were met and complied with applicable quarantine regulations.
