The development is the result of an agreement between the Indonesian government and Apple for the extension of the tech giant's domestic component level (TKDN) certificate, which will allow its products to be sold in the country.
"We fully support the government's efforts to ensure that this investment not only increases the penetration of Apple products in Indonesia, but also provides real benefits for the national technology industry, especially the development of digital talents and the innovation ecosystem," Chalim said here on Thursday.
She further emphasized that the investment to establish an Apple R&D facility, in addition to the Apple Software Innovation and Technology Institute and the Apple Professional Developer Academy, must be accompanied by technology transfer and increased domestic industrial capacity.
"We expect the Apple Software Innovation and Technology Institute as well as the Apple Professional Developer Academy to open up more opportunities for local workers, encourage the development of more advanced digital applications and ecosystems," she expounded.
With the extension of Apple's TKDN certification imminent, she said, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs can prepare to proceed with a distribution permit for the iPhone 16 series whose sales were previously banned in the domestic market.
Chalim expressed the hope that the cooperation between Indonesia and Apple will continue to be developed to strengthen domestic technology and accelerate the growth of the digital economy in the country.
Earlier, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced that Indonesia has reached an agreement with Apple on extending its TKDN certification, effectively clearing the way for the company to officially sell its products in Indonesia.
He informed that the negotiations with Apple lasted five months and were considered tough since both parties defended their respective interests.
From the negotiations on the extension of the TKDN certification for Apple, Indonesia managed to generate several profitable agreements, Agus said.
The agreements include Apple investing US$160 million for the TKDN extension in the new cycle.
