The ministry's Acting Deputy for Special Protection for Children, Indra Gunawan, stated that his institution intends to help the state enhance its surveillance of children's online activities and guide the nation's young talents to utilize the internet in a positive and responsible manner.
In his office's statement cited here on Saturday, he noted that the PPPA Ministry also plans to improve children's digital literacy in schools, inform parents and children about the threats plaguing the internet, and develop digital security features alongside digital platform operators.
Gunawan then stressed that the PPPA Ministry is committed to protecting Indonesian children from the dark side of the digital space.
The official emphasized that cross-sectoral collaboration is paramount for Indonesia to address challenges revolving around children's digital activities.
In this regard, he pointed out that the ministry had identified over 15 thousand children as victims of online sexual violence offenses.
"Moreover, some other kinds of threats, such as online gambling, addiction to games, and sexual exploitation are also prevalent," he added.
With this in mind, he urged digital platform providers, community organizations, and educational institutions to take an active role in protecting Indonesian children on the internet.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has been working on a regulation designed to ensure greater safety for children on social media platforms.
Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid, on February 18, confirmed that the regulation will introduce a minimum age requirement for creating a social media account without substantially limiting children's access to services in the digital space.
She also informed the media that the drafting of the social media rule is over 90 percent complete, with President Prabowo Subianto planning to announce the legal instrument to reinforce the government's commitment to protecting children online.
