Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will grant a quota of around 1 million tons for copper concentrate exports to PT Freeport Indonesia, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced on Friday.

“Freeport's (export) quota is more or less around 1 million tons,” the minister said.

Director general of minerals and coal at the ministry, Tri Winarno, said that Freeport will revise its work plan and budget, which will be evaluated by the government in the next six months.

Afterward, the copper concentrate export quota for Freeport will be officially announced.

"Yes, (Freeport) has submitted a request to revise its work plan and budget,” Winarno confirmed.

He informed that the lower limit of the export duty is 7.5 percent for copper concentrate exports.

However, for the export permit extension, the determination of the export duty for concentrate exports will be decided by the Ministry of Finance.

Earlier, the president director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), Tony Wenas, said that he is ready to export 1.3 million tons of copper concentrate worth US$5 billion by the end of this year.

He added that he is optimistic of obtaining the copper concentrate export permit from the government soon.

The previous permit expired on December 31, 2024.

In October 2024, a fire broke out at the sulfuric acid processing unit at Freeport’s smelter in Gresik, East Java. The incident caused a temporary suspension of Freeport’s production operations in Gresik.

Therefore, the company submitted a request for the extension of copper concentrate exports to the government.
