Nurofiq, here on Tuesday, urged the Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control of the Ministry of Environment to mandate the establishment of air quality monitoring stations, as they will act as indicators of air quality.
"When the indicators are poor, I will proceed to the industries that we suspect are disrupting ambient air quality," he remarked.
The minister cautioned industry players that if they are found to have exceeded ambient air quality standards, they can face imprisonment and fines of billions of rupiah as per Law Number 32 of 2009 on Environment Protection and Management.
This measure is crucial, given that air pollution in the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) will affect the health of around 30 million people living in those areas, particularly vulnerable groups such as older adults and children.
The minister pledged to implement several concrete measures to address the pollution issue by targeting sources from the transportation sector, industries, open burning of waste, and other factors.
The Ministry of Environment has earlier conducted environmental monitoring of suspected polluting industries in Jabodetabek.
It also encouraged the use of emission tests for goods transport vehicles and articulated vehicles, including trucks, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation, the Jakarta provincial government, and the National Police (Polri).
