Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Manpower, Immanuel Ebenezer Gerungan, has emphasized the government's commitment to creating a workforce that is competent, productive, and protected from labor brokering practices.

Gerungan said that one of the concrete steps taken by the government to achieve this has been the establishment of the manpower desk, which functions as an integrated center for counseling as well as for filing complaints and reports on crimes related to employment.

"Through the manpower desk, we want law enforcement in the employment sector to be stronger, provide legal certainty to workers and employers, as well as create a safe and sustainable work environment," he said, according to a statement issued here on Wednesday.

The deputy minister highlighted the practice of labor brokering that is detrimental to the community, saying that many prospective workers are charged millions of rupiah by individuals claiming to represent certain organizations or institutions to get a job.

This practice leads to unfairness in access to work and hinders the efficiency of the labor market.

"Labor brokering not only harms job seekers but also impedes economic growth and causes inequality in the world of work," he said.

To tackle labor brokering, the Ministry of Manpower has proposed several strategic steps, including improving the quality of education and skills training to meet the needs of the labor market.

The steps also include strengthening coordination between the Ministry of Manpower, regional governments, the police, and related agencies to prevent labor brokering.

They further comprise encouraging companies to apply a transparent recruitment system by utilizing technology and independent institutions, pushing for a presidential regulation mandating job vacancy reporting, as well as educating people about legal recruitment agencies.

"I hope these steps can create an employment ecosystem that is more fair, transparent, and competitive so that the Indonesian workforce can have higher competitiveness," Gerungan said.
