Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Australia have pledged to strengthen their partnership with ASEAN by developing effective rehabilitation and reintegration programs, including for foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) and their families.

The commitment was shared during the "ASEAN-Australia Counter-Terrorism Workshop on Good Practice Approaches for the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of FTF and their Families" held on March 7, 2025.

On that occasion, deputy for international cooperation at the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), Andhika Chrisnayudhanto, said that this commitment is part of efforts to develop strategies to prevent violence-based extremism and terrorism.

"I hope that effective rehabilitation and reintegration measures for FTF and their families can be developed and implemented globally," Chrisnayudhanto said in a statement from BNPT here on Thursday.

He also hopes the best practices will be applied not only in Southeast Asia but in other regions as well.

Meanwhile, Head of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Agency, Commissioner General Wahyu Widada, said foreign terrorist fighters pose a serious challenge at both regional and global levels, including for Indonesia.

He stressed the importance of developing effective rehabilitation and reintegration programs. According to Widada, there is a growing awareness that sooner or later, Indonesian citizens will return to their homeland.

"This is why it is crucial to develop and implement effective and strong prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration programs for returning citizens," he said.

Meanwhile, the Australian Ambassador to ASEAN, Tiffany McDonald, reaffirmed his nation's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with ASEAN to achieve a safe and peaceful regional stability.

Preventing violence-based extremism and terrorism through effective rehabilitation and reintegration of FTF and their families is part of collective efforts in the region.
