Jakarta (ANTARA) - Six Indonesian Umrah pilgrims were killed in a bus accident on the Medina-Mecca highway in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, according to Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry's Director for Indonesian Citizens Protection, Judha Nugraha, stated that Indonesia's Consulate General in Jeddah received the accident report from local authorities on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (GMT+3).

"The total number of victims from the Indonesian pilgrimage group is 20, six of whom died, while the rest were injured," Nugraha said in a written statement on Friday.

The accident occurred in Wadi Qudaid, approximately 150 km north of Jeddah. According to preliminary reports, the bus was involved in a collision, which led to a fire.

He said the consulate general had dispatched a team to the accident site and was coordinating with local authorities and other relevant bodies to assess the victims' conditions.

Local hospitals, the pilgrimage guide, Saudi Arabia’s Hajj Ministry representatives, the local Umrah service provider, and the bus operator have all been contacted, Nugraha added.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also coordinated with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the tour agency managing the pilgrimage group to obtain complete data on the Indonesian victims and their families," he remarked.

Nugraha further stated that the Ministry of Religious Affairs has contacted the victims' families in Indonesia and will continue assisting the injured victims in Saudi Arabia.

In a separate statement issued on Friday, Indonesia's Consul General in Jeddah, Yusron Ambari, confirmed that "the injured Indonesians have been treated at Saudi hospitals."
