Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has predicted that the annual Eid al-Fitr holiday travel rush, during which many Indonesians return to their hometowns, will begin on Friday night.

“Tonight, we anticipate an increase in travelers for the homecoming tradition, with a surge expected to start today,” he said at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.

He explained that the increase is driven by the work-from-anywhere (WFA) policy, which allows employees to work remotely. The policy, implemented by several government and private institutions, will take effect on March 24.

To ensure safe, comfortable, and smooth travel during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, the Ministry of Transportation has officially launched the 2024 Eid Transportation Command Post.

“The WFA policy takes effect on March 24. That’s why we’re opening the command post today, as Friday marks the expected start of homecoming trips,” he said.

He added that more than 146 million Indonesians are expected to travel for homecoming this year using various modes of transportation.

“A total of 30,451 buses, 772 ships, 404 airplanes, and 2,550 trains have been prepared,” he stated.

He assured the public that the government has also made the necessary transportation facilities and infrastructure available to support homecoming travel.

Additionally, the government has introduced several incentives and policies to improve public access to homecoming travel. These include an average 14 percent reduction in airfares compared to previous prices, discounts of up to 20 percent on toll road fees, and free homecoming programs.
