Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Housing and Residential Areas (PKP) have handed over keys to subsidized housing to Indonesian teachers to improve their welfare.

According to a written statement issued by the ministry here on Wednesday, the house key-handover event was held simultaneously in Aceh, Medan, Bogor, Bangkalan, Pontianak, Makassar, Kupang, and Jayapura.

"Initially, we were only going to have an MoU (memorandum of understanding) signing, but recently, the PKP Minister told me that we would also hold the key handover," Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, said here on Wednesday.

In line with the fourth mission of President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita missions, the government is committed to building Indonesia's human resources, he added.

The key to building national human resources lies with teachers. He said that teachers are the "heroes of national education" and their welfare should be paid attention to.

"I hope this program can provide benefits, and I hope that teachers, with various improvements in their welfare and services, can work even better, focusing on students' learning and duties as educators," Mu'ti added.

Meanwhile, PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait informed that 20 thousand houses have been readied for teachers, but the key handover event was symbolically done for 250 housing units.

The subsidized housing provision program is one of the government's initiatives to assist low-income communities in owning homes.

It aims to ensure teaching locations are not far from the teachers' residences, so that teachers can focus more on supporting students' learning.

"Our challenge (in realizing this program) is not easy. As directed by the President, I will prioritize policies for the underprivileged," Sirait said.
