"I would like to offer my condolences over the tragedy that occurred just before the 1446 Hijri Eid al-Fitr prayer in the Pemalang Public Square," he remarked during the handover in Pemalang on Saturday (April 5), as cited from a statement here on Sunday.
In addition to the funds, Yusuf also symbolically distributed aid under the Social Assistance and Rehabilitation (ATENSI) program to 23 beneficiaries, including those injured by the collapsed tree, as well as families of the deceased victims.
The minister noted that the ATENSI aid is expected to help the beneficiaries start a business and live a dignified life.
He then highlighted that the Ministry of Social Affairs shares the commitment and responsibility to assist citizens in mitigating and overcoming the impact of natural disasters.
In this regard, the ministry provided Pemalang District with logistical items needed during a disaster emergency period, including two water purifiers, 600 packages of ready-to-eat meals, 140 mattresses, 50 blankets, 20 portable tents, 70 family kits, 160 packages of children's clothing, and family tents.
The ministry mobilized a total of Rp426 million (approximately US$25.6 thousand) to provide all the mentioned types of assistance.
Meanwhile, Pemalang District Head Anom Widyantoro applauded the Social Affairs Ministry for embracing victims of the tree collapse and enhancing the district's preparedness for natural disasters.
A tree suddenly collapsed onto a square packed with people preparing to perform the Eid al-Fitr prayer in Pemalang on March 31.
The tragedy claimed four lives and left 18 others wounded, with 11 suffering severe injuries.
