Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, has urged the public to remain vigilant against scams involving artificial intelligence (AI), including deepfakes.

"We see that AI-generated videos are almost perfect. Not just ordinary people, but even experts can occasionally be deceived by videos or photos generated by AI, as they closely resemble the originals," Patria said in a statement issued on Monday.

He highlighted a new scam involving AI, in which fake money transfer evidence is used to trick customers into believing funds have been sent to their accounts.

"Transfer evidence can be fabricated — even holograms on the back can now be replicated," he noted.

As a result, Patria advised digital service users to exercise caution to avoid falling victim to such crimes.

To combat AI misuse, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has issued a circular on AI ethics.

In response to financial and banking-related crimes, the ministry is coordinating with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Bank Indonesia on preventive and mitigation measures to protect consumers.

Patria also explained that the government is enforcing various laws — the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE), the Personal Data Protection Law (PDP), the Criminal Code (KUHP), and the Copyright Law — to prevent and address AI-related crimes.

Currently, the government is drafting a specific regulation for its AI development roadmap to ensure the technology can be harnessed positively while minimizing its risks.
