“In 2022, we increased the number of dental faculties from 32 to 38 across the country, allowing for a greater intake of dental students," stated head of the ministry’s communication and public service bureau Aji Muhawarman on Monday.
"We are also providing internship programs for dental graduates and implementing special assignment programs to place dentists, particularly in remote, border, and island areas,” Muhawarman said.
He explained that these efforts are in response to findings from free health check programs, which consistently show dental problems as the most prevalent health issue among the population.
Ministry data indicates that while 7,475 (73.2 percent) of health centers in Indonesia have dentists, a substantial 2,737 (26.8 percent) still lack dental professionals.
According to Muhawarman, the primary challenges in providing adequate dental and oral healthcare include the shortage of dentists – with an estimated annual output of only 2,650 dentists from just 38 dental faculties – and the lack of adequate dental units in all health centers.
He further elaborated on common causes of toothaches, including cavities, inflammation and gum infections, broken teeth, improperly growing teeth, as well as poor oral hygiene habits and certain medications.
Muhawarman cautioned that untreated toothaches can have systemic effects, potentially leading to serious health complications such as sepsis, heart problems, and central nervous system disorders affecting the brain.
He emphasized the significant impact that tooth infections can have on overall health.
Therefore, he urged the public to prioritize preventive measures against toothaches by adopting clean and healthy lifestyle habits, such as brushing their teeth at least twice daily and replacing toothbrushes regularly, every three to four months.
He also recommended rinsing with fluoride-containing mouthwash after brushing, consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables, and maintaining adequate hydration.
Furthermore, Muhawarman encouraged the public to undergo routine dental check-ups every six months.
