Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, has said that the tourism sector can serve as an engine of economic growth, poverty reduction, and job creation amid current global uncertainty.

As per government data, in 2024, Indonesia welcomed more than 13 million foreign tourists. The tourism sector also created jobs for nearly 25 million workers and contributed US$16.7 billion to the country's foreign exchange coffers.

“It is time for us to hold a meeting on tourism that can reduce the impact of global uncertainty,” Hartarto said at the 37th Joint Commission Meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UN Tourism Commission for South Asia here on Tuesday.

“We can easily get information, travel, and experience life in various parts of the world. This will bring transformational changes to the development of the tourism sector in the world,” he added.

He said that the role of tourism is becoming increasingly important amid the potential turmoil caused by the US tariffs policy, which could have a major impact on international trade and affect the trajectory of global growth.

According to Hartarto, most countries have lowered their projections for global economic growth to 0.5 percent from 1 percent due to the uncertainty triggered by the tariff policy.

Therefore, the government led by President Prabowo Subianto has designated tourism as one of the pillars of economic growth, he said.

“We have a strong commitment to developing sustainable tourism and environmentally friendly tourism and encouraging local community-based tourism through various programs such as village-based tourism as well as improving destinations from mass tourism strategies to more sustainable paths,” he explained.

At the meeting, Hartarto emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with other countries.

Although each country has its own national interests, Indonesia believes that constructive and mutually beneficial collaboration will strengthen collective resilience and encourage the creation of global prosperity, he said.

He also invited all delegates to enjoy the rich flavors of Indonesian cuisine and get to know more about Indonesian products.

“Tourism is a sector that not only provides economic benefits but also social and cultural benefits. So, let’s work and use this forum to collaborate. Let’s discuss how to promote tourism that can increase economic growth, inclusiveness, while preserving the environment,” he stated.

“Indonesia is always committed to pursuing the principles of sustainability and inclusiveness in developing the tourism sector,” he added.
