During a working visit to the Putri Cempo Final Waste Processing Site (TPA) on Friday, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the government has enforced the closure of 343 TPAs that practice open dumping, where waste is disposed of without proper handling.
"This is what we call open dumping, which leads to serious environmental pollution," he remarked.
He confirmed that the 343 open-dumping sites lacking proper waste handling have been ordered to cease operations.
This directive is based on Law Number 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management.
This law aims to preserve environmental functions and prevent pollution and environmental damage.
"The government's enforcement has a legal foundation in Law No. 32 of 2009 to ensure that the methods of waste handling activities comply with environmental principles," he remarked.
He noted that each district and city with open-dumping sites has six months to implement various initiatives, which the Ministry of Environment will then evaluate.
"This process will certainly take a bit longer in larger cities, and we will carefully monitor each step taken," he stated.
He warned of consequences if the TPA management failed to take this order seriously.
"If they are not serious in addressing this, there will be legal consequences in the form of increased government enforcement and potential criminal charges," he remarked.
In this regard, he requested that regional leaders prepare temporary relocation sites for waste disposal using a sanitary landfill system.
