Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's unwavering support for Palestinian independence was conveyed by Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, during a meeting with the Chairman of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Rawhi Fattouh.

"Supporting Palestine is a moral and historical obligation for Indonesia. We remain steadfast in our commitment to the Palestinian people's struggle, a commitment that has been consistent since Indonesia's independence," Maharani told Fattouh, according to her statement released on Sunday.

During a parliamentary discussion forum in Istanbul, Turkey, Friday, Maharani emphasized that Indonesian support for Palestine is echoed not only by the government and people but also by the DPR, which actively advocates for Palestinian independence.

"In both bilateral meetings and international forums, the DPR consistently voices support for Palestine and urges global efforts to achieve peace there," she stated.

Maharani highlighted that the DPR consistently raises the issue of severe human rights violations against Palestinians in various multilateral platforms, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), ASEAN forums, and the United Nations.

She emphasized that the DPR's actions align with Indonesia's constitutional mandate to promote world peace.

In her discussion with Rawhi Fattouh, Maharani also pledged to strengthen cooperation between the DPR and the Palestinian Parliament.

She asserted that enhanced cooperation could garner broader international support for the Palestinian people, enabling them to live in peace and security in their homeland.
