"I am optimistic that the steps we prepared not only help us reduce shocks but also open more opportunities to realize a more inclusive and sustainable economic growth," Indrawati stated at an interview on the sidelines of the 2025 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings.
As published on her Instagram handle @smindrawati on Saturday, the minister clarified that Indonesia prioritizes dialogue to grasp the US administration's perspective and intentions. As expected, Indonesia will then propose solutions to help narrow the US trade deficit with the country.
She highlighted the Indonesian government's commitment to lowering tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, including through deregulation and administrative reforms.
As the bilateral negotiation is ongoing, Indonesia also seeks to diversify its export markets, the minister stated.
"Our deliberations with partners, such as the ASEAN Plus Three and the European Union, are still on for our common interests in realizing a mutually beneficial cooperation," Indrawati remarked.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously projected that balancing the US trade deficit with partner countries could take two or three years.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia received praise for its swift negotiation efforts and comprehensive cooperation proposals to address the US trade deficits.
He explained that Indonesia's proposal included five cooperation areas: national energy resilience, export market access, business and investment deregulations, strategic industry and critical minerals supply chains, and technology and innovation access.
Indonesia and the US have also agreed to hold intensive technical discussions over the upcoming two weeks to seek concrete and mutually beneficial solutions.
