Jakarta (ANTARA) - Manpower Minister Yassierli highlighted the importance of collaborative and fair artificial intelligence (AI) governance at the BRICS Labor and Employment Ministers' Meeting in Brasilia, Brazil, on Saturday, Indonesia time.

During the meeting, he said that AI is not merely a trend but a transformational force that is changing the way the world works, including in Indonesia.

"AI has transformed industry and redefined skills. However, with such great potential, this transformation must be managed wisely and inclusively," he added.

According to Yassierli, AI presents advantages and challenges. For instance, it can boost efficiency, productivity, job creation, and innovation. However, without inclusive governance, it can widen the skills gap and eliminate the workforce.

"Indonesia does not see AI as a threat, but as a force that must be utilized responsibly. Technology must serve humanity, not the other way around," he said.

He informed that Indonesia is prioritizing a people-centric approach in AI adoption to create wider opportunities, protect human dignity, and strengthen social justice.

He then outlined the approach, which is being realized through four main focuses. The first is digital inclusion.

He said that the government views access to technology, infrastructure, and digital literacy as a basic right.

"Indonesia is committed to ensuring that rural communities, informal workers, and vulnerable groups are not left behind in the digital transformation," he expounded.

The second focus is skills preparation. To address the skills gap due to rapid technological advances, Indonesia is encouraging the modernization of vocational training through industry and education partnerships.

Yassierli said that the national training program is designed to utilize AI efficiently and reach more than 280 million citizens.

"We are also building a National Productivity Center with AI as a strategic theme, both as a research subject and a tool for workforce transformation," he informed.

The third focus is adaptive social protection. He stressed that the social protection system must accommodate the job transition period.

The Job Loss Insurance Program in Indonesia is a real example of this since the program combines income support, retraining, and facilitation of re-employment, he said.

The fourth focus is inclusive social dialogue. The minister stressed the active participation of the government, employers, and workers, saying it is key to formulating fair and responsible AI governance policies and frameworks.

At the forum, Indonesia also invited BRICS countries to strengthen global cooperation, especially in digital skills investment, inclusive employment policy exchange, AI governance collaboration, and promotion of innovation based on justice and sustainability.
