Jakarta (ANTARA) - The special envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, led by the Indonesian seventh president, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), delivered a message from President Prabowo Subianto to Catholics during the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican on Saturday, local time.

Jokowi, together with other envoys, namely Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono, and Chairman of the Welcoming Committee for Pope Francis' Apostolic Journey to Indonesia in 2024, Ignasius Jonan, attended the entire funeral procession of Pope Francis at St. Peter's Square, Vatican.

"We would like to express our deepest condolences for the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis and also convey a message from President Prabowo," Jokowi said as broadcast on his social media account as accessed on Sunday.

In the same video, he also conveyed the message from President Prabowo.

"We have lost a role model who left a legacy of love for world peace, a legacy of humility, and also a legacy for all nations in this world," he remarked.

"We all pray for His Holiness Pope Francis to rest in peace, and may God accept his soul," he continued.

Pope Francis' funeral was held in St. Peter's Basilica Square, Vatican, on Saturday, attended by more than 250,000 mourners, some of whom were state leaders and important world figures.

At St. Peter's Basilica, the Indonesian envoy had the opportunity to see Pope Francis' coffin directly and pray for the deceased. Ignasius Jonan also walked over and held the edge of the coffin before turning to leave the room where Pope Francis was laid out.

The Dean of the College of Cardinals of the Holy See, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, presided over the funeral mass at St. Peter's, which was also attended by cardinals, archbishops, bishops, and priests from around the world.

The Eucharistic procession was then concluded with the Ultima commendatio and Valedictio, marking the beginning of Novemdiales, or nine days of mourning and mass throughout the Catholic Church for the repose of Pope Francis' soul.

From St. Peter's Basilica, the body of the late Pope Francis was taken to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy, to be buried according to his will.

Pope Francis became the first pope to be buried outside the Vatican in 350 years.

Popes are generally buried in St. Peter's Basilica. However, he chose to be buried in his favorite church, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
