Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, in collaboration with UNICEF, is intensifying efforts to protect children in the digital space and the real world.

"Our children have the right to a safe space, both online and offline," Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said after a meeting with UNICEF Representative in Indonesia Maniza Zaman here on Tuesday.

"This is about building a creative, resilient, and safe future generation," the minister expounded.

She expressed appreciation to UNICEF for supporting the formulation and ratification of Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning Governance for Child Protection in the Implementation of Electronic Systems, and emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration.

"The challenges in implementation are real, but the spirit of collaboration will make us win," she said.

The regulation covers user age verification, protection of children's personal data, and digital education of parents and children to make the digital space more child-friendly.

Hafid expressed the hope that the regulation will become well-recognized by ministries, institutions, and digital platforms, as well as the general public.

In addition to regulating the protection of children in cyberspace, the ministry is currently preparing a "child-friendly city" initiative that focuses on providing more creative, innovative, and safe spaces for children in the real world.

Meanwhile, Zaman described the steps taken by the Indonesian government as brave and visionary.

Indonesia, she said, has the potential to become a global role model in child protection in the digital era.

Indonesia is not only a leader in ASEAN, but also has the power to inspire the world. This is an important step that many countries should follow, she added.

UNICEF is ready to continue supporting Indonesia, including in strengthening the role of local governments to support child protection as a national movement, she said.
