Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) will begin discussions on the Domestic Workers' Protection (PPRT) Bill ahead of International Labor Day.

"This is a gift from the DPR to the workforce," said DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad following a meeting with trade union representatives at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He noted that DPR Speaker Puan Maharani and other parliamentary leaders have approved further deliberation of the bill.

Ahmad said that the DPR has submitted labor group inputs to the government, including recommendations for protecting workers from potential layoffs.

In response, the government has moved to establish a task force focused on employment termination issues.

Said Iqbal, President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), stated that around 90 percent of unionized workers from Jakarta, West Java, and Banten are expected to participate in a May Day rally in Jakarta on Thursday.

He added that in addition to pushing for the PPRT Bill’s passage, workers will demand the abolition of outsourcing, fair wages, the formation of a layoff mitigation task force, the enactment of the Asset Forfeiture Bill, and a new Employment Law.

"Additionally, we will advocate for the ratification of ILO Convention No. 188 on Work in Fishing," he said, referring to a key International Labour Organization agreement.

Earlier on Wednesday, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto intends to attend the May Day celebrations at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta.

He emphasized that the President's presence underscores the government’s appreciation of Indonesian workers’ contributions to national economic growth.
