"President Prabowo is the first president in the reform era to join workers at a May Day event, following in the footsteps of President Soekarno during similar celebrations in 1965. President Prabowo deserves recognition for this," he remarked.
In a statement received here, Soeparno viewed the president’s presence as a sign of the government’s commitment to supporting laborers and advocating for their interests.
The parliamentarian then highlighted the workforce’s crucial role in achieving the country’s eight percent economic growth target.
"We should use May 1 as a reminder that workers’ welfare and the creation of a suitable business and investment ecosystem are closely linked," he noted.
He further asserted that the formulation and implementation of effective employment regulations must be accompanied by measures to foster a healthy climate for investment, assuring business leaders that their operations are protected from disruptions.
"We cannot allow problematic community organizations to intimidate and extort investors. If we aim to create millions of job opportunities, we must ensure there is no room for gangsters disguised as organizations," he emphasized.
Additionally, Soeparno called for collaboration between the government, security forces, and the public to address any practices that could threaten Indonesia’s investment climate.
"The state must take firm action, as protecting investors is equivalent to protecting the future of workers," he concluded.
In his address at the May Day event, President Prabowo responded directly to several key demands of unionized workers, assuring them that the government is on their side.
He pledged to establish a National Labor Welfare Council to enhance employment regulations and work towards abolishing outsourcing practices, among other reforms.
Furthermore, the president expressed support for fast-tracking the legislation of bills related to domestic workers' protection and the confiscation of assets from corrupt individuals.
On the global stage, Prabowo stressed his commitment to advocating for the ratification of the International Labour Organization's Convention No. 188 on Work in Fishing.
